Dear Editor,
I would like to commend this Granger led administration on their quest to ensure equality and fairness in society which wasn’t really the norm with the previous administration. Efforts to ensure all are held accountable in their profession or way of life is moving slowly, but in time and with the government’s intentions to ensure everything is done according to specific rules and regulations, I am confident that our country will be transformed.
However my letter touches on a matter of concern to me and it should be to every citizen especially those that ensure their fair share of taxes are remitted to the Guyana Revenue Authority. The GRA is working assiduously to ensure all the relevant persons are caught in their tax net and pay their respective amount of tax. Employees are the people who pay their taxes as they should since it is deducted from their salaries by their employers and remitted to the tax agency. However, not all employers are honest enough to pay over what they would have deducted and this leads to the state losing a lot of money and some people paying taxes whilst others get a free pass.
This brings me to the question of what is the situation with the eleven (11) companies that the GRA had obtained judgement against in 2013. These companies were said to have owed over 6 billion in tax mainly from VAT and P.A.Y.E. It is unfair for these companies and individuals to be able to cheat the system whilst others are made to pay every last dollar. I am certain if the GRA is to conduct investigations on some of these companies who are still operating and are still able to carry on regular business with the GRA like accessing compliances, evidence of the same non-payment of relevant taxes to the agency will be uncovered. It is my personal opinion that once a company or an individual has broken the law and robbed the state of its revenue constant checks should be made to ensure that they comply.
Once again the GRA is doing the job it was established to do and over the past two years there have been many positive improvements in the way this agency operates but let us be fair and let each person and company pay their fair share of taxes. This way targets will be set and met and prevent only a section of society to feel the burden. Taxes are used to help improve our country and if it is stolen or not recovered despite a court ruling then all that is being put in place is being defeated. Great job GRA and I am sure the public will be anxious to know what the situation with these companies is; I know I am.
