Dear Editor,
I note an interesting letter about a third political party being required locally, with suggestions of suitable leaders. Of course, a third party is required, but with what agenda in mind? In the UK, it is virtually the same requirement that is being talked about.
But what? Instead of “race”, read “class”. The UK class system is so entrenched, that it is now well nigh impossible to break the mould.
Class is to Brits what race is to Americans.
In Guyana, those of us with “long memories” will remember the origins of the existing state of political affairs.
In the beginning, the two major races, presumably “longing to be free” joined hands and formed a “new” PPP, one party led by Dr. Jagan, the other by Mr. Burnham, both charismatic men, full of ideas, Mr. Burnham able to express them with style.
Thus fused, Mr. Burnham representing the Lodge district, as I recall, in the first general elections held under this umbrella, won every vote!
Eventually there was a party falling out, and the races went their separate ways – the outfit became “Split PPPs”. Now, what agenda could a third party present? What worthwhile interest/s could it represent?
People worldwide seem to have become cynical and suspicious of politicians in general.
One view I have heard expressed is that politicians are like baby diapers and should be changed often and always for the same reason.
A universal revolution is now afoot, and it will involve the younger, eager generation, tired of the bickering and dithering of their elders, longing to be on the move. Let us all prepare ourselves in the meantime.
