Police Prosecutor Bharrat Mangru has been stripped of his prosecutorial responsibilities and has been transferred to the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) with immediate effect.
Mangru was prosecuting a number of gold smuggling cases that the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) is currently investigating.
Kaieteur News has learnt that upon the advice of a senior government official, Mangru was summoned to the OPR and was questioned in connection with an investigation involving opposition members.
When Kaieteur News contacted OPR, an officer there confirmed that Mangru was indeed transferred to that office.
The official could not say why the officer was suddenly sent over there.
The official asked that any information regarding the transfer of the officer should be directed to the Guyana Police Force hierarchy.
All efforts to contact Acting Police Commissioner David Ramnarine proved futile.
In an invited comment, Mangru confirmed that he was transferred, and that he was indeed stripped of his responsibilities as a prosecutor.
He too could not say what the reasoning behind such a move was.
Mangru said he received a letter signed by acting Police Commissioner David Ramnarine and that his transfer and demotion was with immediate effect. Mangru said he did not request a transfer and would have still liked to perform his duties as a prosecutor.
The peace officer said as far as he knows he is not being investigated, and indicated that this move comes as a ‘total surprise’.
Mangru was slated to appear as the prosecutor at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court in a gold smuggling matter later this month.
The government has to now reassign that case to someone else.
