She will be missed says Max Massiah
Host of popular TV programme ‘Maximum Sports Combat & Strength’ Max Massiah said yesterday that Guyana Karate College’s founding member, 5th Dan Sensei Lavern Jones will be missed.
Sensei Jones passed away on Friday May 12 at Georgetown Public Hospital. She was an original founding member of GKC since its inception in 2005. Jones began training in the early 1970s under 7th Dan Shihan Keith DaCosta and as she progressed, specialized in teaching the children’s class.
”She suffered a stroke and the last time I was in Guyana last February and I visited her in Hospital before was discharged,” said Max Massiah, who disclosed that Lavern was one of his most trusted students.
“I will miss her terribly. Ironically, after I returned from my Caribbean tour her Christmas card arrived by mail, three months late. In that card she ordered three custom made Black Belts for her students. Maureen and I as well as the IKD send her daughter and loved ones our most sincere condolences. She is now at peace with the Lord,” Massiah concluded.
Massiah said Sensei Jones was once a guest a guest on his programme on NCN and offered sincerest condolences to the GKC, Master Frank Woon-A-Tai, her relatives & friends.
Jones’ passing follows shortly on the heels of the passing of 10th Dan Shin Kai do Grandmaster Stephen Monasingh, another Guyanese who has given Guyana yeoman serving in Martial Arts, teaching many students over the years the discipline of the art. Both Jones and Monasingh were dedicated Martial practitioners and excellent teachers.
Kaieteur Sports Department extends sincere condolences to the family, friends and students of Sensei Lavern Jones as they cope with her loss.
