A family of four of Lot 1096 Edinburgh Housing Scheme on Sunday evening lost all their
belongings in a fire of unknown origin that began just around 21:00hrs.
The owners, who were not at home at the time of the fire, are now contemplating their next move since nothing was saved from the inferno.
A neighbour, Arthur Lewis, told reporters that he was just retiring to bed when he heard noises that prompted him to check out where they were coming from.
“I was lying down on me bed and I hear something like squib (firecrackers) go off, so I jump off me bed and peep through the front window…and I see the fire, so I call for me wife… Fire! Fire! And we run out and call neighbours around to help.”
Lewis said that nothing much could not have been done in terms of saving items within, since the home was heavily grilled. He said the fire service arrived some 20 minutes later and managed to save the structure itself, but not the interior sections. Furniture, appliances and other household amenities were destroyed.
The owner, Ishwar Singh, an employee of Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company in Berbice arrived after the blaze was brought under control. His wife, who is said to be overseas, is expected to return to Guyana today. The couple has two children, ages nine and three. Singh was unavailable to give a comment.
