Junior players display excellent form in early going
The Guyana Squash Association (GSA) is holding its second junior tournament for 2017,
the Woodpecker Products Ltd Junior National Squash Championships at the Georgetown Club Inc courts.
Play continued on day two with fixtures in six of the ten categories up for grabs. Most of the country’s top players are in excellent form and this was evident from their fantastic play on court.
In one of the highlight matches of the evening Kirsten Gomes displayed excellent court coverage during her upset win over Madison Fernandes in their Girls Under-15 match. Both girls showed how much they have improved during the past few months with their excellent all round play. Kirsten won a close first game 11- 9, but Madison rebounded to win the second game in identical fashion 11 – 9. The third game was close throughout but Kirsten eventually won it 11 – 8 and then from 8 all in the fourth she won the next three points to secure the game 11 – 8.
In the Girls Under-19 category defending champion Taylor Fernandes had a straight sets win over Makeda Harding. The first game was extremely close with Taylor winning it 12 – 10. The second and third games were a lot easier with the scores being 11 – 3 and 11 – 7.
