Seven Primary Schools in Linden participated in the annual Linden Fund USA (LFU) Spelling Bee Competition last Tuesday at LICHAS Hall.
First place went to Condoleeza DeSilva of One Mile Primary; second place Grade Five
pupil Kennard Seenauth of Wismar Hill Primary; and Watooka Day Primary pupil, Juwanna Bethune placed third.
First, second and third place trophies and replicas for each participant were donated by Ansa McAl Company. The LFU provided additional prizes for the top three students, which included a 9″ tablet, a MP3 player and a backpack of school supplies.
This scholastic event, which began in 2008 in collaboration with the Regional Education Department, invites three top spellers from each of nine primary schools in Linden and Region 10 to participate. It offers these pupils an opportunity to exhibit their vocabulary in a competitive yet friendly atmosphere.
“The LFU would like to thank the Regional Education Department for its nine-year partnership in hosting this Spelling Bee for Primary school children. We’re deeply committed to our education mission in Region Ten and this annual event is just part one of the ways in which we give back to the community.”
Also supporting the success of this annual event was LFU partner, For The Children Sake Foundation, whose members Autavia Powers and Rebbie McAlmont, helped conduct the Spelling Bee.
Several educators were involved, among them Donna Fraser who served as the moderator, Loma Moseley as the Judge, and Shenella Richmond and Neocie Myers, as scorers.
Several LFU members in attendance included LFU Vice Chair Keith Semple, Board member George Parris and Chapter member and donor Charmaine Critchlow.
