Several recyclers (pickers) at the Haags Bosch dumpsite yesterday received safety gear from Puran Brothers, the contractor that is managing the facility.
The company yesterday disclosed that the aim is to create a safer environment and foster the development of the Haags Bosch Recycling Movement.
The over-60 persons have been playing a critical role in helping the operations of the facility at Eccles.
Puran Brothers Inc. explained that they rummage through the waste that are deposited by haulers and trucks and sort the metals for export; plastics for recycling; wood for low cost housing; glass bottles for sale to local beverage companies with old clothing processed and sanitized for cleaning the hands of mechanics in engineering firms.
Also sorted are fans with even motors being rewound and repaired.
“Some recyclers possess enormous skills. They search for components of high priced items such as fridges, stoves, microwaves and electronic devices such as TVs and computers and other mechanisms which can be returned to the environment,” the contractor explained.
The company said that recyclers operate under very harsh conditions.
“They are engaged at the latter end of the recycling process. These items should have been sorted at the source-— homes, industries and commercial houses.”
Puran Brothers said that it has recognized the importance of safety and health at the landfill and decided to procure personal protection equipment for all the recyclers.
These include safety helmets, reflector vests, safety gloves and boots.
Recently, Puran Brothers received a workplace award for promoting safety and health standards from the National Advisory Council on Occupations Safety and Health.
The Haags Bosch site was built a few years ago after the Le Repentir landfill became a health hazard and had reached its maximum.
