The unavoidable postponement of last Sunday’s 2nd Boyce & Jefford Relay & Family Fun Day has allowed the teams confirmed to participate in the 5-a-side Football Competition to increase their preparations ahead of Sunday’s
big showdown, at the Police Sports Club, Eve Leary.
The postponement which came as a result of heavy rains has worked in favour of some of the teams who were short of practice leading up to the competition and the extra week has proven beneficial to those teams that lacked adequate field time.
According to some players, the extra time has allowed them to organise meaningful practice sessions and fans will be able to witness a high quality of football entertainment throughout the day.
More and more teams from communities throughout the country are gravitating to the exciting format and its growth has become something of a phenomenon and widely received by football fans.
Its embrace has been such that the more traditional format is not enjoying the same level of support, while the lure of cash incentives makes it a compelling draw for teams. Add to that the growing popularity of teams such as Sparta Boss, Back Circle, Agricola Champion Boys, Bent Street West Front Road and Sophia and their loyal band of supporters and you see immediately why the format has enjoyed unrivalled success.
Despite the staging of other disciplines such as track & field, cycling and dominoes on the day’s list of activities, it is anticipated that the football segment will be the real pull. With the addition of newcomers Police and the GDF and their eagerness to be reckoned among the top teams in the shorter version, fans are in for a real treat with exciting matchups in abundance.
The competition will feature a number of the top teams in the shorter version of the sport and among those listed to compete are current national Guinness and Petra Organisation / GT Beer champions Sparta Boss, Bent Street, Sophia, Camp Street All Stars, Back Circle, West Front Road ‘Gold is Money’, Agricola Champion Boys, Broad Street Bullies, GDF and Police.
Up for grabs is $50,000 for the winners and $25,000 for the beaten finalist. Meanwhile, the latest team to confirm participation is Kanaimas of Better Hope, East Coast Demerara, another testimony to the format’s rapidly increasing attractiveness. Starting time is 10:00hrs.
