– Favourites Dave & Celina All Stars also in action
Another large crowd is expected to converge at the Amelia’s Ward Basketball Tarmac to witness quarter-final action in this year’s Linden segment of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Competition this evening, starting from 20:00hrs.
The curtain raiser will see Swag Entertainment go up against Cherokee Park in what is predicted to be an entertaining encounter.
The former made it to this round following an impressive 3-0 triumph over Goodfellas in round of 16 play, while Cherokee Park booked their spot at the expense of Future Stars who they squeezed past 1-0.
In the game that follows, pre-tournament favourites Dave and Celina All-Stars square off against Young Kings.
The All-Stars marched into this round on the back of a 3-0 thrashing of Amazings and will no doubt be aiming to duplicate that performance with another emphatic display.
Young Kings, on the other hand, rallied past Trainline Warriors in a penalty shootout and obviously will have to step up their play to get past their opponents.
The third game pits 2014 champion Jermaine and Family Silver Bullets against High Rollers in another game that is expected to produce fireworks from the start.
Silver Bullets repeatedly pierced the defence of 2011 and 2013 champion Eagles in coasting to a comfortable 4-0 win to secure their place in the last eight.
High Rollers, though having to stave off a spirited Dream Chasers unit, before winning 1-0, displayed admirable fortitude and should not be underestimated.
Defending champion Team 25 engagement against 2012 and 2015 title holders Amelia’s Ward Russians will fittingly bring the curtains down.
This is a tough encounter for the reigning champion as they visit the home of the two-time champions in what is being touted as a virtual final.
The holders needled Coomacka 1-0 in the preceding round, while the Russians enjoyed a similar margin of victory over Main Street Panthers.
Meanwhile, the action returns to the Mackenzie Market Tarmac for the semi-finals on Wednesday.
The winning team will receive $400,000 and the championship trophy along with a place in the National Playoffs, while the 2nd, 3rd and 4th placed teams collect $150,000, $75,000 and $50,000 respectively.
The quarter-final matchups are seen below:
Swag Entertainment vs Cherokee Park-20:00hrs
Dave and Celina All-Stars vs Young Kings-20:30hrs
Jermaine and Family Silver Bullets vs High Rollers-21:00hrs
Team 25 vs Amelia Ward Russians-21:30hrs
