In its continuing effort to improve the standard of cricket in Berbice, the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club, M.S joined hands with the National Sports Commission and Food for the Poor (Guy) INC to assist 12 Cricket
clubs drawn from across the ancient county. The Clubs that received a collection of cricket balls, cricket bats and a set of cricket stumps were Bush Lot United, Blairmont, Courtland, Tucker Park, Kildonan, Police, Fyrish, Chesney, Berbice River, Big Star, Upper Corentyne and Black Bush Polder.
Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster, who spearheaded the project, stated that all Berbicians should be worried about the future of Berbice Cricket. Foster disclosed that when the RHTY&SC was founded in 1990 by the ST. Francis Community Developers there were over 120 functioning cricket clubs, but that figure has fallen to below 40 in 2017. The RHTY&SC, he stated is the only cricket Club in Guyana and the Caribbean that works overtime to assist rival cricket clubs to fulfil their mandate. The long serving Secretary/CEO stated that this assistance is done under the Club’s Say Yes to Sports Award and the assistance is given because the RHTY&SC wants every other Club to enjoy the same level of success as it does.
The Club sought and obtained $300,000 from the National Sports Commission to purchase the cricket balls, while Food for the Poor contributed close to $1M worth of Cricket bats and stumps. The RHTY&SC Secretary/CEO expressed gratitude to Director of sports Christopher Jones for his continued confidence in the work of the Club. He noted that the balls would enable youths from the different Clubs to organise matches against other teams. Food for the Poor (Guy) also came in for high praise for its continued investment in Berbice Cricket and special mention was made of Chairman Paul Chan-a-Sue, CEO Kent Vincent and Senior Manager Jimeel Davis for their part in obtaining the cricket gears.
The RHTY&SC, M.S Say Yes to Sports Programme is organised on an Annual basis by the Club’s Farfan and Mendes Under-15, Pepsi Under-19 and Intermediate, Bakewell Under-17 and Second Division, Metro Females and Gizmos and Gadgets Under-21 and First Division Cricket teams. The Club intends to assist as much as possible other Clubs in Berbice later in the year.
