A grand day of sports organised by the West Berbice Police Operational Youth and Sports Clubs was held recently at the Hope Town Community Center Ground, West Coast Berbice.
The day’s activity saw youths from three youth clubs participating. The clubs were drawn from the Blairmont, Fort Wellington and Weldaad areas.
The youths were involved in a number of indoor and outdoor games including athletics, basketball, volleyball, and table tennis among other activities. There were also a number of novelty and ring games.
The feature basketball game played between Hopetown Warriors and Ithaca Hardliners saw Hopetown winning easily by a comfortable 20 points margin 48-28. At half time, the host had already established a sizable 19 points lead with the score being 32-13.
Top scoring for Hopetown were Carrie Mentor with 14 and Ruel Edwards with 10 points.
Fort Wellington was the top club on show.
The day’s activity was held with the blessings of Divisional Commander Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam. The event was coordinated by OC NO3, Deputy Superintendent Karl Wilson, Community Relations Officer Assistant Superintendent Keith Williams and Coordinator of the Police Youth Groups of the No3 Subdivision Inspector Cynthia Kelly.
According to Kelly the day’s activity was held in an effort to keep the youth occupied in meaningful activities, sports being one such activity.
