Jonathan Fagundes and Llewellyn Gardner were the first to cross the line in the Open and Veteran categories respectively at this year’s Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) organised Trevor Rose Memorial 5K run, yesterday.
Trevor Rose, a President of the GABA was shot dead on January 26, 2014 at age 32; at the time of his death Rose was also an award winning fashion designer, known especially for his captivating costumes during Guyana’s Mashramani celebrations.
Fagundes was timed at 23 minutes 44 seconds (23.44 seconds) finishing ahead of Seon Burry (26.30 seconds) and Calvin Thomas (26.32 seconds) to the Open category. Gardner ran 28.55 seconds, beating out Jardine Joseph (29.26 seconds) and Alexi Prashad (31.15 seconds).
Beyoncé Bepeazer was the youngest female to cross the line while 9 year-old Justin Prize was youngest male. Pacesetters’ Nathan Saul (29.03 seconds) was the first basketball player to make it across the finish line and Stephen Peters (38.25 seconds) was second.
Trevor Rose Jr. and the former fashion designer’s mother were on hand to help with the presentation of prizes. Ansa McAl, under its Mackeson and Lucozade brands along with Banks DIH, Trophy Stall, Pulse Entertainment, Beepats and ‘A’ Division Commander Clifton Hicken were the sponsors of the event.
GABA President Adrian Hooper thanked the participants for helping to make this year’s event, the third of its kind, a success, while adding that next year, the association plans to make the Trevor Rose Memorial 5K even bigger.
