Die Hard Brothers were crowned champions of the Guyana Floodlight Softball Cricket Association/Digicel 10/10 cricket tournament on the Essequibo Coast after recording an eight-wicket win over Adventure in the final on Saturday night last.
Purposeful bowling from Vijay Surujpaul restricted Adventure to 91-9, batting first in front of a large crowd at the Anna Regina Community Centre ground. Surujpaul bowled tidily in the latter stages of Adventure’s innings, conceding 12 off his allotted two overs and picked up four wickets while Greg Singh had 1-14.
Die Hard Brothers were outstanding in the field effecting four run outs. Opener Shaz Grosvenor top scored for Adventure with 39 which contained three fours and a six; no other batsman managed double figures, extras contributed 23.
The tournament’s most outstanding player Richard Latif was run out for eight while Patrick Rooplall was dismissed for six as Die Hard Brothers were reduced to 22-2 in two overs in reply. But Wazeer Hussain and Surujpaul took their team home with sensible batting.
Hussain timed the ball well, hitting four fours and one six in an unbeaten 44 while Surujpaul remained not out on 15; extras assisted with 20, Die Hard Brothers finishing on 93-2 in 8.5 overs.
Earlier, Die Hard Brothers defeated United Warriors by 43 runs in their semifinal encounter. Led by an attacking 66 from Latif, Die Hard Brothers posted 160-3, taking first strike. Latif smashed five fours and four sixes while Rooplall made 25 and Greg Singh 13.
United Warriors responded with 117-8. A. Mohamed struck 42 as Latif picked up 3-21 and Rooplall 2-22. Adventure beat Richmond by 24 runs in their matchup. Batting first, Adventure scored 92-6, Andy Dass made 22 and Narendra Sarabjeet 17; A. Collins and S. Ali claimed two wickets each.
Richmond were limited to 68-9 in reply. Ali and R. Doodnauth were the only batsmen reaching double figures with 14 and 12 respectively; Sarabjeet captured 3-16 while there was one each for S. Green, E. Baksh, S. Rajibanie and C. Jairam.
Die Hard received a trophy and $350,000, Adventure a trophy and $150,000 while the losing semifinalists took home a trophy and $50,000 each. Surujpaul was named man-of-the-match in the final while Brian Mangar and Ramesh Narine were the tournament’s leading batsman and bowler, respectively.
