Three Assistant Superintendents of Police are currently in Russia, participating in training in the fields of anti-terrorism and extremism.
The training began on April 15 and will conclude next Tuesday. The participants
are Mitchell Caesar, Wayne DeHearte and Simon Reid.
The course will address issues relating to terrorism and extremism, counteraction against narcotics and psychotropic substances and economic crimes.
Minister of Presidency, Joseph Harmon at his press conference on Thursday said that cabinet had given its approval for several police officers to participate in training programmes overseas. He said that the course forms part of the overall thrust of the government to build capacity within the Guyana Police Force and to ensure that the skill-sets of the police officers continue to improve.
Also, the Minister said that approval was given by cabinet for Guyana to participate in a cooperation project hosted by the Caribbean Regional Drug Law Enforcement Centre in Jamaica.
According to Harmon, the course seeks to boost the capacity of countries along the regional cocaine trafficking transportation route to combat maritime trafficking in a coordinative manner.
For this course, Corporal Higgins will be participating.
In March 2016, the Russian Federation had pledged to continue providing training for members of the Guyana Police Force.
The Russian Government has been facilitating training for Guyanese policemen over the past several years, and there are plans to extend this training to programmes being done at the Regional Counter Drug Law Enforcement Training Centre in Managua, Nicaragua and the Russian-Cuban Fire and Rescue Training Centre in Havana.
The aim of this training is to strengthen the capacity of participating in the fight against drug trafficking and coping and recovering from natural disasters, fires and other emergencies.
