It took Keemo Paul and Gudakesh Motie just 44 minutes yesterday to bowl the Guyana Jaguars, without six of their senior players, to register an emphatic innings and 121 runs win against the Windwards Volcanoes with
over a day and two sessions to spare in their penultimate round match in the Digicel Regional four-day which ended at Providence.
Scores: Jaguars 379, Volcanoes 95 & 163.
Left-arm spinner Motie grabbed 4-45, while Paul followed up 6-28 in the first innings with 3-37 to dismiss the Volcanoes, overnight on 102-5, for 163 as Devon Smith, who made 61 from 117 balls and 155 minutes with seven fours and two sixes and Shane Shillingford, who clobbered five fours and two sixes in swashbuckling 14-ball unbeaten 35 led their effort.
With the Jaguars number supporter Norman ‘the Juice man’ shouting plenty of advice from a virtually empty stands and sounding as loud as a 5,000 crowd, Smith and Kyle Mayers walked to the middle in bright sunshine with their team needing 82 to make the Jaguars bat again.
Mayers (15) was removed by Paul at 115-6 before Paul, one of several next generation of players in this Guyana side, got rid of the big fish when was sent back at 131-7 and despite Shillingford’s shot filled cameo the match was all done and dusted before the first water cart made its appearance to take the Jaguars to an unassailable lead going into their last game against the Leewards Hurricanes from Friday.
The Jaguars now join Jamaica as the only teams with three consecutive titles and gives Leon Johnson the distinction of being the only Guyana Captain with three titles. Clive Lloyd, Roger Harper and Carl Hooper all have two titles each.
Scores: VOLCANOES 95 (Sunil Ambris 29, Shane Shillingford 24; Keemo Paul 6-28) and 162 (Devon Smith 61, Shane Shillingford 35 not out; Gudakesh Motie 4-45, Keemo Paul 3-36).
JAGUARS 379 (Assad Fudadin 125, Steven Jacobs 61, Chanderpaul Hemraj 54, Keemo Paul 46, Rajindra Chandrika 35; Delorn Johnson 5-46, Kyle Mayers 4-89).
