With works moving apace on the Liliendaal Railway Embankment acrow panel bridge, three other East Coast Demerara bridges are scheduled to be rehabilitated.
Contracts in the sum of $65M have already been awarded to contractors to execute the works.
Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, during the post-Cabinet press briefings on Thursday, told media operatives that a $21.7M contract for the rehabilitation of the Annandale acrow panel bridge was awarded to KP Thomas and Sons Contracting Incorporated.
The bridge is approximately 30 feet long.
The 30-foot Plaisance Railway Embankment acrow panel bridge will also be rehabilitated. Construction firm, V. Dalip Enterprise was awarded this $19.9M contract.
BK International was awarded the $23.4M contract to rehabilitate the 30-foot acrow panel bridge on Lusignan Railway Embankment,.
Minister Harmon said that the three bridges are in bad shape.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Infrastructure is working to complete the rehabilitation of the Liliendaal Bridge before the initial deadline of July 2017. Works commenced in early March to prevent a collapse.
According to reports, the bridge had shown signs of imminent failure. One of the panels had detached making the bridge unstable.
The rehabilitation of the Liliendaal Bridge is being carried out based on recommendations from the Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation (DHBC) Inspection Team and engineers attached to the Ministry of Public Infrastructure.
The $89M project is being undertaken by H. Nauth and Sons Civil Engineering Contractors.
There are almost 30 of these bridges in Guyana. The Demerara Harbour Bridge was constructed using acrow panel and Uniflote components.
