UK-based former middle distance queen Waveney Benn continue to give back to her
home country following another act of goodwill this time to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception which became the latest recipient to benefit from her ongoing exercise.
Benn presented a small quantity of basketballs and footballs to Monsignor Terrence Montrose at the Church’s Head Office on Brickdam last Wednesday to fulfill a promise she had made during a visit last year.
Monsignor Montrose in his response thanked Benn for keeping her promise to the Church, informing that the gift will be used by the young members to hone their skills during their leisure time.
The former outstanding athlete also donated a quantity of athletic apparel and jogging shoes to the Junior Carifta Games athletes shortly, before they departed these shores on Thursday last for the event.
Benn was a former 400 and 800 metres champion, who also participated at the Junior Carifta Games has always sought to give back during her annual visits, a passion she said developed after listening to some of the hardships young promising athletes face in their pursuit of fulfilling their dreams.
She reflected on the time she too faced such a dilemma coming from a poor family and her parents financially incapable of providing the essential tools to guarantee success. Benn said it was more about her determination to success than having the requisite attire to compete.
She promised to continue to support athletes and organisations in need of support.
