The effort of eight cricket teams of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club, MS
to get over 60,000 youths in Region 6 to Say NO to Drugs, Suicide, Crime, Alcohol and YES to Education, Life, Peace and Sports received a major boost last Thursday. Three companies – Demerara Mutual Life, North America Fire Insurance and Guyana Power and Light Company donated a combined total of $200,000 worth of trophies to the campaign which is administered by the Rose Hall Town Farfan and Mendes Under-15, Bakewell Under-17 and Second Division, Pepsi Under-19 and Intermediate, Metro Females, Gizmos & Gadgets Under-21 and First Division teams.
The RHTY&SC during the year would use the trophies to host numerous Educational and Sports events under its Say NO/Say YES Programme, while some would be used by the RHTY&SC, M.S 27th Annual Award Ceremony scheduled for the 23rd of April, 2017. Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster also explained that the Club on a monthly basis receives requests for as much as 24 trophies from other NGO’s, Schools, Churches and Clubs for the hosting of cricket, football, athletics, Cultural and Educational Events.
The Club tries as much as possible to fulfil every request once a proper investigation is done to verify the events would be actually held. The RHTY&SC, Foster stated, strongly believes in using sports, education, culture and religion as an alternative to a Life on the road for youths and as such is very grateful for the support of the three companies as the Club strives to fulfil its target of 500 programmes/activities during 2017.
The RHTY&SC during the year would be hosting a number of sporting tournaments itself with at least twenty tournaments at all ages, two five a side football tournament, three basketball tournaments, two volleyball tournaments and several athletics meets. The Club would also support the hosting of scrabble, chess, softball, dominoes, table tennis and cycling tournaments during 2017.
Asst. Organising Secretary Rabindranauth Kissoonlall expressed gratitude to the three donors for their support and reassured them that the trophies and medals would be used for the intended purpose. Special mention was made of Chief executive Officer of GPL Mr. R. Homer, General Manager of North America Fire Insurance Basil Mahadeo and Marketing Manager Mr. Clarence Perry of DMLAS for their assistance in obtaining the donation.
