The Guyana Squash Association (GSA) is holding the Toucan Distributors Junior
Skill level tournament its first Junior tournament for 2017 at the Georgetown Club Inc. courts. Play continued on Thursday night at the Georgetown Club Inc. courts with matches in seven of the eight categories being contested.
Category A finally started with Alex Cheeks showing how much he has improved as he defeated Caribbean Under-19 Girls runner up Taylor Fernandes in four close games. Alex won the first game 11 – 5 and then also won a close second game 11 – 9. The third game was close throughout with Alex having match ball at 11 – 10 but Taylor won the next three points to force a fourth game. Alex, however, was not to be denied and won the fourth game 11 – 7.
In category B Samuel Ince-Carvalhal was looking for another win in his match against Makeda Harding. Samuel won the first game 11 – 6 but Makeda evened the match by winning the second game 11 – 8. Samuel then won the third game 11 – 6, but Makeda again evened the match with an 11 – 8 win in the fourth game. Spectators were looking forward to the deciding fifth game and the two players did not disappoint as both players gave it their all. At 9 – 7 it seemed as if Samuel would prevail but Makeda held her nerve and won the next four points to secure a well deserved victory 11 – 9. Sarah Lewis won her first match in this category when she defeated Maya Collins in four games. Scores were 9 – 11, 14 – 12, 11 – 3, 11 – 3.

Kirsten Gomes beat Aliyah Persaud 11 – 3, 11 – 3, 11 – 3
Category D
Mohyryan Baksh beat Haley Carpenter 11 – 5, 11 – 5, 1 – 1
Category E
Nicholas Verwey beat Chad De Abreu 11 – 5, 11 – 7
Dhiren Persaud beat Angel Rahim 12 – 10, 11 – 8
Aishani Persaud beat Rayad Boyce 11 – 7, 11 – 7
Category H
Joshua Verwey beat Christiana Fernandes 11 – 2, 11 – 4
Noah Rahaman defeated Grant Fernandes 11 – 9, 11 – 6
Javed Saul beat Christiana Fernandes 11 – 7, 11 – 8
Joshua Verwey beat Javed Saul 11 – 5, 13 – 11
Matches continue today at the Georgetown Club courts starting at 11.00pm with the finals set for later in the afternoon starting at 5.00 pm.
