Mandela Avenue will be the scene of much commotion tonight when the semi-finals of this year’s Petra Organisation / GT Beer Futsal Competition kick-off, at the National Gymnasium.
The four semi-finalists include defending champion Bent Street who take on Back Circle and Sparta Boss that tackle Sophia and already fans have likened the two matchups to the ‘Thriller in Manila’.
The opening game between Bent Street and the young upstarted Back Circle is anticipated to set the tone for the expected adventure movie that features Sparta Boss and Sophia to bring the curtains down for the night.
Bent Street and Back Circle start the ball rolling in a clash that features unbeaten teams and they are coming off contrasting quarter-final wins with the former coasting to a comfortable 2-0 triumph over West Front Road, while the latter was made to fight before edging Broad Street Bullies 2-1 in an exciting encounter.
The champs have been in magnificent goalscoring form, netting tournament high 23 goals involving every player on their roster.
The star-studded lineup top goalscorers are Colin Nelson and Konata Manning with four goals apiece, while Joshua Browne, Okanie Fraser, Anthony Abrams and William Europe trail closely with three, three, two and two goals respectively.
The other players with one goal each are Wendell St. Hill, Dwight Peters, Sheldon Profit, Kelsey Benjamin and Sheldon Holder.
Back Circle has so far netted a total of 16 goals with Stephon McLean topping the list with five goals, while Selwyn William, Akeemo Anthony, Sylvester Richardson and Curtez Kellman have supported with three, three, two and two goals each and Keron Joshua solitary strike round out their tally.
However, in the defensive department, Back Circle are slightly better, only conceding six goals to Bent Street’s seven, a statistic that could prove to be decisive.
In the final game, Sparta Boss faces the fit and dangerous Sophia side which has been running teams into the ground with their speed and counterattacking ability.
The two teams reached this stage after posting narrow wins with Sparta Boss coming from behind to beat North East La Penitence 2-1, while Sophia registered a 3-2 victory over Tucville.
The Bosses have scored 15 goals to date in their five matches with Devon Millington, the competition’s leading marksman, netting nine of those.
Strike partner Gregory Richardson has contributed three goals, while Sheldon Shepherd and Cleon Forrester each have one and an own goal accounting for the other.
Sophia has the superior number in the offensive department, scoring 17 goals to underline their potency with Dwayne Lowe on four goals and Akeem Jaikissoon with three.
Desmond Cottam, Shem Arthur and Sheik Kamal have two goals apiece, while Orlando Jordan, Simon Emmanuel and Joshua Kamal each acciount for one goal.
Sparta holds the edge in the defensive section, conceding six times, while Sophia’s backline has been infiltrated ten times.
Meanwhile, four exhibition matches will precede the start of the semi-finals with the Media Team set to engage Republic Bank, while Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) tackle Guyana Power and Light (GPL), Pretty Posse Taxi going up against Green Ice Taxi and Customs squaring off against Bent Street Youngsters.
The winning team will receive $400,000 and the championship trophy, while the runner-up, third and fourth places teams collect $200,000, $100,000 and $50,000 respectively.
The final is set forApril 15, at the same venue.
