It appears as though police ranks are clueless as to the whereabouts of Regan Rodrigues, who is still the prime suspect in the murder of political activist, Courtney Crum-Ewing.
This comes following orders from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to reopen the case for the taking of further evidence from police witnesses and to rule on the voluntariness of all oral statements of Rodrigues
Not only has Rodrigues, 33, also known as ‘Grey Boy,’ failed to report to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown, he also failed to turn up in court yesterday when the matter was called before Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
It was Magistrate Latchman who in January discharged a murder indictment against Rodrigues for Crum-Ewing’s killing.
During the brief court hearing, Prosecutor Nigel Hughes told the court that police have not yet arrested the suspect, since they have been unable to locate him.
According to the prosecutor, a summons will be prepared and sent to Rodrigues’ last known address to inform him that he has to attend court.
Magistrate Latchman indicated to the court that she will have her clerk notify Attorney Adrian Thompson, who represented Rodrigues in the previous matter, about the court proceedings.
The matter will be called again on April 25, for reports.
It had been reported that the bullet-riddled body of Crum-Ewing was found at Third Avenue, Diamond New Scheme, East Bank Demerara on March 10, 2015. The 40-year-old was shot twice to the temple, once to the back of the head and twice to the stomach. The police in a statement had said that the political activist was accosted by four men in a car, one of whom discharged several rounds, hitting him about the body. It was reported that the killer (s) used a .32 pistol to execute Crum-Ewing.
Minutes before Crum-Ewing was gunned down, he was reportedly heard via bullhorn urging residents of the neighbourhood to vote against the then ruling party.
In relation to the previous murder charge, Magistrate Latchman had cited that one of the court’s reasons for discharging the matter was because there was no evidence to support that the firearm tendered during the preliminary inquiry was used by Rodrigues to kill the political activist.
The prosecution’s inability to make out a prima facie was once again highlighted when the Magistrate disclosed that the prosecutor failed to request the court to rule on the admissibility of caution statements allegedly made by Rodrigues. While stating that several inferences could be drawn from those statements, Magistrate Latchman underscored that they did not implicate Rodrigues in the murder of Crum-Ewing.
