The drainage system of the flood-prone Mahaica/Demerara region is in for a massive revamping, Minister of Agriculture, Noel Holder said yesterday.
The region extends East of the Mahaica River to the West Bank of the Berbice River.
The population of Region Five is approximately 50,000 with main economic activity being rice farming followed by sugar and coconut farming, beef and dairy cattle ranching.
The Minister said that the Mahaica/Mahaicony/Abary-Agricultural Development Authority (MMA/ADA) is currently conducting a survey in the region which will provide recommendations that will be implemented to ensure effective drainage in the region. He noted that an effective and efficient drainage structure is the key to ensure that the farmers keep producing, thus leading to overall prosperity in the region.
Delving into details, Holder stated that the revamp will entail the resuscitation of three kokers and the maintenance of outfall channels, earth and other structural works in the region. The maintenance works, he added, are expected to begin in a matter of days.
The National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) had announced last week that the sluices identified for resuscitation are located in Number 11/ Number 12 Village; Golden Grove/Lovely Lass; and Trafalgar/Union.
Works are expected to be completed by the ending of May, ahead of the rainy season.
Asked what will be the fate of ‘abandoned’ kokers in the other regions, the Minister noted that four kokers will also be resuscitated along the coastland – primarily in Region Four (Demerara/Mahaica) with three additional pumping stations slated to be constructed at strategic, extremely low-lying points which have a large number of residents.
He added also that a survey is being conducted to examine the sluices in Regions One (Barima/Waini); Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam); Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara); Four (Demerara/Mahaica); and Six (East Berbice/Corentyne).
The village of Buxton, he pointed out, will benefit from the construction of two pump stations that will facilitate three pumps.
The Government this year will be seeking to acquire 12 pumps for flood-prone areas along the coast in Essequibo, Demerara and Berbice. Additionally a new dredger is expected to be introduced which will improve outfall channels’ capacity to carry water, significantly decreasing the possibility of flooding, especially along the coastland.
