Born on the Volcano ravaged Island of Montserrat, 24-year-old West Indies ‘A’ pacer Ronsford
Beaton grew up on the Essequibo Coast in Guyana but after not being selected for Guyana at First-Class level since the third round of this season’s Regional Four-Day tournament last November, Beaton is still interested in playing for the Leewards Islands.
Beaton captured 14 wickets from seven matches with a best of 4-28 in this year’s Regional Super50 in Barbados, second only to Raymon Reifer’s 16 from eight matches on the Guyana list of wicket-takers. This was after he had worked hard on some problems with the bowling action.
A former student of Abram Zuil Secondary, Beaton’s cricket has progressed rapidly despite the lack of proper cricket development programmes in the Cinderella County which forced him joined the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) to improve his cricket after becoming the only fast bowler to Captain Essequibo in the youth and senior Inter-County tournaments.
He made his First-Class debut against the England Lions at Providence in 2011 as an 18-year-old and his Regional 50-over debut two years later against the Leewards in Antigua and after 26 matches he has taken 41 wickets. Beaton has 64 wickets from 33 First-Class games and 31 wickets from 36 T20 matches.
A product of the High Performance Centre (HPC), Beaten has played for, Essequibo (Youth & Senior) Guyana Under-19s, West Indies Under-19s, Guyana, Central Essequibo, Guyana Amazon Warriors, Trinbago Knight Riders, GCC, West Indies ‘A’ and Dynamites and now wants to represent the Leewards in next Regional season.
Although Beaton performed well in the three-match ODI ‘A’ series in Sri Lanka last October taking seven wickets against the Sri Lankans, he has not gotten a retainer contract from the GCB and is forced to explore his options.
Back in January Chief Operations Officer (COO) of the LICB, Vernon Springer told Antigua’s Daily Observer that Beaton was one of the ‘overseas’ players expected to join the Leewards franchise ahead of a preparatory camp at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground.
“We promised you we are going to have the best franchise and whatever it takes, we are going to make sure it works. The other big name for you is Ronsford Beaton — the Guyanese fast bowler — who is also going to be part of our 20-man squad,” Springer had said then.
Beaton was then picked in the Guyana team before the Leewards held their trials but has not played for Guyana since then.
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
