According to Divisional Commander, Marlon Chapman, at least three persons have been questioned by the Mahaicony Police and have been placed on station bail. The files have since been sent to the Fraud Squad, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Georgetown. So far there is no word of charges laid.
The Mahaicony Abary Rice Development Scheme is a semi autonomous State entity with a mandate to administer State lands within the Mahaicony- Abary area, and to support farmers. Tracts of land have been rented out to rice farmers, and they are also provided with drainage and irrigation services.
A former manager and a board member are among the people questioned so far.
Former chairman of the board, Abel Seetaram, who has been identified in some sections of the media as one of the persons questioned by police in relation to the irregularities uncovered at Burma, has categorically denied being involved in any irregularities. He is claiming that contrary to what has been published in some sections of the media, the police have not been in contact with him in relation to the matter.
The entity, last week Monday, opened an agro chemical outlet on the MARDS Complex, allowing farmers to source chemicals needed in the industry at a competitive price, rather than having to travel outside the area.
A new board of directors took office in June 2015, under the chairmanship of Abel Seetaram. Seetaram, however, no longer sits on the board, having left in June 2016. He has been succeeded by Alison Bourne, while Dane Henry assumed duties as manager as of March.
