Local weightlifters will continue their quest for international honours at the World Masters Games in Auckland, New Zealand from 20 – 30 April 2017 after the Guyana Amateur Weightlifting Association named a squad four member to represent this nation.
Those shortlisted for participation are overseas based, Howard Bovell, competing in the 77kg class (75 – 79 yrs), Colin Mc Koy, competing in the 62kg class (55 – 59 age group), Deion Nurse, competing in the 77kg class (55-59 age group) and Sean Cozier, competing in the 94kg class (40-45 age group).
The locally based selectees are scheduled to leave Guyana on April 18th to join their compatriots in New York and onward to Auckland one day later.
Local lifters have attended this championship in 1998, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2009 and 2016 and have procured commendable accolades. In 2000, the Masters Team had distinguished itself in Florida U.S.A after lifting two Gold medals, one Silver and one Bronze in the small nation category.
GAWA officials continue to exhibit confidence in their charges in the procurement of lucrative accolades at this level. They are appealing to the business community and the wider Guyanese society for assistance towards the squad’s participation.
