Thirty-seven year-old Mikhail Rodrigues, the man who staged a highly publicized one-man protest against the parking meter project was yesterday slapped with a fraud charge.
Rodrigues, a resident of Coldingen, East Coast Demerara, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer to a fraudulent conversion charge. He pleaded not guilty.
It is alleged that on August 11, 2015, at Georgetown, Rodrigues, being solely entrusted by Raghubeer Paul with one motor canter CJJ 4976 valued $2.2M, in order that he would used same and return the proceeds to Paul, fraudulently converted same to his own use and benefit.
Rodrigues was represented by Attorney-at-law Shontel Scott, who asked that her client be released on reasonable bail citing that he has no prior matter in any other court.
Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore had no objection to bail being granted to the defendant and Rodrigues was released on $200,000 bail. He will make his next court appearance on April 7.
Last month, Rodrigues staged a one-man protest stating his inability to afford paid parking in the capital city. Rodrigues had used a sledgehammer to lash off a parking meter clamp that had been placed on his vehicle.
