– 17-year-old son critical
A 59-year-old man of Plantation Warren, No. 19 Village, Corentyne succumbed to severe third degree burn injuries on Thursday at the New Amsterdam Hospital, two days after a kerosene lamp exploded in his home.
The explosion also severely injured his son who is currently in a critical state at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
According to information received, on Tuesday at around 7 pm, Deodatt called ‘Ziggy’ and his son, Mark Deodatt, were attempting to light a kerosene lamp when it exploded after they poured kerosene into it.
The man’s older son, 21-year-old Mark Deodatt told Kaieteur News that he was sitting with a few friends when heard his mother screaming for help. The younger Deodatt stated that when he responded, he saw his father and brother engulfed in flames.
“When I go to she, I see fire and she scream and tell me seh me daddy and meh brother catch afire. So we run and try fah out and throw water pon me father and me lil buddy jump in a barrel”.
Both men were rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital for treatment while the younger Deodatt was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital for further treatment.
According to the young man, doctors informed his family that due to the extent of his father’s injuries, he had a 50/50 chance of survival.
His body is currently at the Hospital’s mortuary awaiting post mortem examination.
