Dear Editor,
Please permit me some space in your newspaper to raise a burning and very troubling issue that has been severely affecting residents in Region 8. There is an urgent need for the Minister of Communities, the Hon Ronald Bulkan to launch an urgent and immediate investigation into the actions of Regions 8’s administration Some who have assumed the positions after the 2015 General and Regional Elections continue to operate as though they running their own business, answerable to no one and are permitted to use tax payers monies whenever they feel like.
This administration spends taxpayers’ monies with little or no care while evidently rewarding their close associates with contracts. One senior spends on average six (6) working days per month in Madhia and can be seen on numerous occasions spending time at the a particular place in Georgetown while openly boasting that he doesn’t need to sit in an office to work in the region.
Meanwhile a number of contractors and service providers are at an odds to receive monies owed to them for projects completed and services rendered. A number of reports and complaints have been communicated to the Ministry of Communities with no action thus far.
Mr. Editor despite the Auditor General’s report highlighting several discrepancies and burning issues in the region the administration continues to operate as an unaccountable regime. Should the residents of Region 8 continue suffering because these people campaigned for Minister Bulkan who was assigned to Region 8 during the elections campaign; or should we accept their word as they openly boast about their very close friendship with the very minister? This is very unfair to residents who voted for this Government and seek no special favours; but rather a fair and just performing Minister. If Minister Bulkan truly and seriously cares about the residents of this region then he will act as a Minister of the people instead of acting like a politician representing a particular political party.
There was much hooray and cry in removing Carl Parker as REO of Region 9 and Minister Bulkan was swift to act, however, we the residents of Region 8 deserve equal and accountable leadership as the party-placed people cannot continue running this region like a ‘fish shop’. The government campaigned on the promise of eradicating corruption and ending massive ills that were plaguing Guyana thus ensuring that there is transparency in how things are done. Unfortunately many are still trying to ascertain what has become of these promises made.
Mr. Editor a simple check at Air Services Limited (ASL) for the many chartered flights that some seniors took and a review of the many persons who are still owed millions for contracts and services for 2016. Check the visitors’ book for Signature Inn in Georgetown and asked the officials who stayed there what their business was in Georgetown.
The Minister in defense of what is happening may claim ignorance but he should be cognizant about the significant number of persons who either resigned or requested to be transferred last year from Region 8, owing to the behaviour of a certain person and if the Minister is still unaware then the President may need to reconsider his choice for Minister of Communities as certainly this is no way for tax payers’ monies to be spent and the affairs of such an important ministry be managed.
