A missionary and a tourist, both Americans, were on Monday fined and ordered escorted to the nearest port of exit by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, after they appeared before her on charges of illegal entry and overstaying.
Richard Robbins, 62, and Ronald Horrer, 66, pleaded guilty to the immigration breaches.
Particulars of the charge, against Robbins stated that between December 6, 2016 and January 16, 2017, at Lethem, having been permitted to stay in Guyana from September 5, 2016 to December 5, 2016, he overstayed the period.
Horrer’s charge stated that between October 1 and October 31, 2016, at Lethem, he crossed a land frontier, without presenting himself to an immigration officer.
An attorney for Robbins told the court that his client has done work with non-governmental organizations in Region Nine, where he is involved in teaching of bible classes.
Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones said that Robbins was arrested during a raid conducted by police on February 16, at a hotel in Takutu. He said that the foreigner’s travel document was examined and it was revealed that he was breaching the law.
Robbins and Horrer were each fined $30,000 on their charge. They were given an alternative of four weeks’ imprisonment. The Chief Magistrate ordered that the men be escorted to the nearest port of exit after payment of the fines or serving the default prison terms.
Before the Magistrate passed sentencing, Robbins apologized and expressed his desire of returning to Guyana to complete his mission.
