Dear Editor,
It must be considered that both previous and current administrations have not played a significant role in implementing relevant solutions for young people graduating from the university of Guyana, CSEC graduates, qualified and experienced persons, who have sacrificed time, money, blood, sweat & tears to better themselves in turn hoping to do something meaningful with their life.
We have seen the chaotic destruction of many industries in Guyana whether, rice, sugar, bauxite etc since they haven’t been competitive on the global market. It is absurd for the current administration to blame previous governments for mismanagement of the economy since this would be pointless, but they should collectively harness the potential of the country so investors can view our country as more appealing.
I am narrowing the scope of this letter to our new investor, Smart City Solutions Aka Green Monster according to the “word in the street”. With local government elections not being held for the past 23 years until 2016, and the City Council now attempting to function as an independent body, making relevant and necessary decisions to make Georgetown the garden city again they entered, into a contract with the acclaimed Green Monster. Was the tendering process perfect? Was a feasibility study made available to the general public; to my knowledge I’m not sure. However, one must consider that a feasibility study demands a lot of resources and as a country we are quite aware that the City Council didn’t and don’t have the resources to have such a task carried out. Now from a business perspective SMART CITY SOULTION would have naturally had to provide the resources to have this done which gave rise to a more flexible contract.
As Guyanese, it is our democratic and civil right to question the alleged misuse of power by the City Council and if it exists that irregularities are found we should be open to have rational dialogue and consultation considering that a large amount of finances and capital have been invested into the project which our government and the City Council simply cannot afford to repay. Lamenting negative rhetoric of revocation of the project which in my opinion provides jobs and generates revenue for this economy would be more irresponsible and simply not a good and feasible option. I must say that the culture of lawlessness which has been prevalent is being addressed by all sections of society by peaceful protest which is commendable; sadly if this movement was done for the Marriott deal, the GPL & GTT mismanagement, and all other questionable deals in the past, we would have a much greater Guyana.
Nevertheless, we have seen a gradual change in the Guyanese culture, where investors & the government are being pressured for more accountability and greater transparency. But, back to the parking meter project. I applaud both parties in making the decision in amending the contract to be more flexible for Guyanese as we seek to pave a way forward with fewer repercussions for the Government and City Council.
I recall several months, the company held a job fair at the national library, with hundreds of young professionals unemployed and the employed who were willing to leave there current under-paid jobs, eager to hear about the launching of a new company promising to provide Better Jobs. With this been said bring THE GREEN MONSTER, BRINGS PROGRESS, BRINGS MODERNIZATION, BRINGS ADVANCEMENT, BRINGS THE JOBS, BRINGS THE GARDEN CITY AGAIN!
