The Cheddi Jagan Research Centre yesterday expressed its disgust at utterances made by leaders of the A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance for Change administration concerning the Red House matter.
In a press release the CJRC said that it is appalled by the statements made by these APNU-AFC functionaries who challenged the manner in which the lease to the land and building which housed the centre was obtained illegally.
The statement read, “The inference to be drawn from those statements is that the lease was not only improperly obtained but that there were hidden and ulterior motives on the part of those who were involved.”
Further, the company described comments made by some persons as distasteful since they once claimed to embrace the legacy of Cheddi Jagan but have betrayed same and are now in bed with those who conspired to deny Dr. Jagan his rightful place in history.
“They are now seeking to justify their betrayal by making wild and unsubstantiated statements.”
The Centre was established not as a profit making organization but to promote the legacy of one of the finest and most outstanding sons of Guyana, “someone who dedicated his entire life for freedom and democracy and for the building of a united and prosperous country,” the Red House statement said.
With this in mind, the company believes that the former President is deserving of a special place in the history of Guyana.
“The granting of a building and a piece of land in his honour and memory pales into insignificance when compared to the monumental contribution and sacrifices Dr. Jagan made for the overall good of this nation.”
As such, the CJRC finds it bad enough the use of disparaging statements regarding the legacy and contributions by the uninformed and those who historically stood on the opposite side of the political divide. Moreover, the company finds the unpleasant comments from those who professed allegiance to the ideals and vision of Dr. Jagan to a level of hypocrisy and opportunism.
“The Cheddi Jagan Research Centre has lived up to, and will continue to be a Centre of reading and research into the large body of writings and speeches made by Dr. Jagan and in the preservation and promotion of his great legacy at its current location in accordance with our 99 years lease.”
The occupancy of Red House has become a controversial issue whereby some sections of society believe that the High Street building should be designated to house solely the documents belonging to the late President Cheddi Jagan.
However, President David Granger has ordered the revocation of the lease allowing CJRC occupancy of the building.
The revocation has been challenged and the matter will come up once again in court on February 20, 2017.
