The colour of Vreed-en-Hoop, West Demerara, was yesterday green and yellow as the Alliance for Change (AFC) held its Fifth Biennial Conference at the community’s Primary School.
The event was held under the theme “In Unity; Improving Governance; Focused on the Vision’. The event saw delegates and observers from all corners of Guyana coming out in their numbers to appoint a new Leader, Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, General Secretary and Treasurer of the 12-year-old party.
The party has an Electoral College system comprising 275 delegates with Region Four (Demerara/Mahaica) with the largest number (75) followed by Region Six (East Berbice/Corentyne), 40 delegates; Region One (Barima/Waini), 10 delegates; Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), 20 delegates; Region Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara), 15 delegates; Region Five (Mahaica/Berbice), 20 delegates; Region Seven (Cuyuni/Mazaruni), 10 delegates; Region Eight (Potaro/Siparuni), 10 delegates; Region Nine (Upper Takatu/Upper Essequibo), 10 delegates; and Region 10 (Upper Demerara/Upper Berbice), 20 delegates; Women For Change (WFC), 10 delegates; Youths For Change (YFC), 10 delegates; United States of America Chapter, nine delegates; Canada Chapter, six delegates; Caribbean Chapter , six delegates; and the United Kingdom Chapter, four delegates.
The Returning Officer for the elections was Clayton Hall.

The roadways leading to the venue were lined with vehicles stretching to Plantain Walk to the South, and to the intersection of the Western Bank and Coast of Demerara, to the North.
Large buses bearing zones from far-flung areas were also seen. Model ‘M’ trucks and Canters were also present apparently used to transport participants.
Meanwhile, the mood of the proceeding was somewhat sombre as supporters eagerly awaited the second session of the conference during which they were required to vote. That mood began to dissipate after the respected speakers rose to give these presentations.
The applause offered up as encouragement to the presenters, occasionally drowned out the cacophony of car horns and the loud vendors’ advertisements commonly associated with Vreed-en-Hoop.
Party Spokesperson, Imran Khan, told Kaieteur News that the number of delegates and observers to the conference was over the 800-mark.
