A 33-year-old Cuban National was yesterday remanded to prison after it was alleged he trafficked a female Cuban National for sexual exploitation.
The man, Eladio Pereza, of 27 Providence Public Road, East Bank Demerara, denied that between March 1, 2016 and January 20, 2017 at the Bollywood Club, East Bank Demerara, he recruited, transported and harboured the individual for the purpose of sexual exploitation.
Pereza was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to him by the Magistrate.
Pereza spoke through a translator and told the court that he had no knowledge about the charge laid against him.
Attorney Mark Conway represented that defendant and requested that his client be released on reasonable bail. He said the allegation against the man is trumped up.
Conway stated that is client is married to a Guyanese woman and is not a flight risk.
He further explained that his client has been living in Guyana for over two years because he has strong business and family ties here.
Conway stated that if bail was granted to his client he was willing to comply with any conditions granted by the court. He also mentioned to the court that business relationships are the only types of relationships that his client has at his establishment.
Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers objected to bail based on the nature of the allegation and the fact that the defendant is a Cuban National and if granted bail he might not return to court for the trial.
According to the Prosecutor, the Virtual Complainant is currently in protective custody.
Bail was refused and the accused was remanded to prison. Pereza will make his next court appearance tomorrow for the commencement of trial.
According to reports, ranks from the Counter-trafficking in Persons Unit conducted a raid at popular locations at East Bank of Demerara where the Virtual Complainant was rescued.
