Government will soon launch a $50M youth programme that is seeking to attract the country’s brightest and best minds. The Youth Initiative Programme (YIP) will be a collaborative effort between government and a number of agencies across the country. It is expected to come on stream by the end of March.
The programme has two components an in-school aspect that caters for children from primary to Secondary school and for young adults at the tertiary level. The in-school component of this programme expects pupils to develop innovative ideas with the support of their schools.
Addressing the issue was Minister within the Ministry of Education Culture Youth and Sports, Nicolette Henry. She explained that in keeping with the administration’s drive towards a ‘green’ economy projects will have to encapsulate this. To this end science, technology, arts and mathematics are some of the areas that are encouraged.
Henry said that Government will soon be putting out a call for proposals and successful applicants will have their projects fully funded under the YIP. In addition those whose projects are selected will be summoned and will be involved in a period of information sharing and capacity building.
To ensure that youths are properly guided and advised during the execution of their projects, they will be placed at a company or organization that engages in work that aligns with their projects. In addition, there will be monitoring and evaluation to ensure projects are properly executed and that funds are well spent and value for money is being achieved.
Henry said that government is making a concerted effort to arrest and address the plethora of problems that continues to plague this specific group. Of the $50M that was set aside for this programme (YIP) it is mandatory, the Minister says, that no less than 90 percent of that funding be spent on that programme.
The programme is expected to be launched at the Pegasus Hotel by March month end.
