Over the years the issue of having abandoned vehicles parked and left on the road shoulders have become a topic of discussion for motorists and other persons traversing the Corentyne Public Road.
Vehicles that include combine harvesters, bulldozers, tractors & trailers and derelict motor cars are left on the roadside for years by mostly farmers who no longer find them useful. The vehicles, many complain, pose a major threat to road users, particularly motorists, who sometime,s in cases of emergency, find it difficult to avoid in a busy traffic situation.
Prime Minister’s Representative in East Berbice, Gobin Harbhajan recently met with various Neighbourhood Democratic Councils in Region 6 where the issue was discussed. According to Harbhajan, “many lives have been lost due to vehicles colliding with abandoned vehicles… these accidents occur when motorists are forced off the road”.
Several concerned citizens are calling on the owners of these vehicles to remove and place the vehicles at locations where they do not pose any danger to road users.
Harbhajan explained to the NDC representatives that, apart from being a road hazard, the abandoned vehicles give the public road and villages an unsightly appearance.
He said “the office of the prime minister is concerned about the apparent lack of will in dealing with the problem, we want to promote a clean and green Guyana; we want to promote tourism, this issue has to be addressed”.
He called on the NDCs and offenders for a concerted effort to ensure that the road shoulders of the Corentyne highway are entirely rid of such eyesores and hazards.
