A Mahaicony Creek family is attempting to come to grips with two major incidents that badly affected them Tuesday.
One was the death of the patriarch of the family, prominent rice farmer, Angad Panday, while the other was a night-time fire at their Esau and Jacob property.
According to Dr. Parva Panday, a son of the farmer, the first bit of bad news came earlier in the day when the family learnt of the death of his father in hospital.
The elder Panday had been living at the Mahaicony Creek home all his life and had reportedly been ailing.
Living at the home with Panday was one of his sons, Paul.
Esau and Jacob is a community located about three miles from the Burma branch road.
According to Dr. Panday, he was told that there was a power outage at the Mahaicony Creek property around 21:00hrs. The power came back on at 23:00hrs.
Shortly after that, the family smelled smoke. They rushed down to the kitchen and saw smoke and flames emanating from behind a refrigerator.
The family members attempted to use water from the kitchen sink to douse the flames but it quickly became uncontrollable.
According to Dr. Panday, his brother lived there with two adults and two children.
The brother barely managed to rescue the two children who were upstairs sleeping.
“It has burned flat. Two cars were also burned. They have lost a lot of stuff.”
The doctor also disclosed that farming equipment was parked elsewhere.
The family is now being forced to stay in another building in the yard.
In addition to the loss of the home, they now have to prepare for the funeral of their loved one.
