Schools programme to resume early next year
A superb display of word forming skill helped Carlton Murray to ascend to the championship seat when scrabble players convened for the monthly Goodwill Tournament at the Murray’s Nandy Park home last Sunday afternoon.
Carlton secured 4 points and a massive spread of 1750 to lay claim to the prestigious accolade. Defending champion, Ulric Harris, lost the title by default after he became ill and was unable to participate.
At first, it appeared as though Ruby Cummings, who once held the trophy, would have repeated the feat after defeating Murray in the first game of the day by a spread of 47. However, Murray remained undaunted and went on to chalk up decisive victories over Maurice Munru (+51), Yvonne Murray (+102) and Michael Benjamin (+293). He lost to Cummings by a spread of 47 and benefitted from a bye (+50). The group will not play again until after the festive season since both Murrays will be out of the country on a well-deserved vacation. In the meantime, the schools’ scrabble initiative will resume shortly with the hope that all systems would be in place early next year.
So far, several schools have received scrabble paraphernalia including President’s College, North Ruimveldt (Multilateral) Secondary School, Caramel Secondary and Annandale Secondary School among others.
It is also hoped that the revived vigor will see a more broad based involvement among the communities in all ten administrative regions.
The school programme initiative has received the approval of the Minister of Education, Rupert Roopnarine and is being monitored under the sports department of that ministry.
