Clairmonte Gibson fought the fight of his life to overcome an equally determined Barbadian,
Alayl Jones, to eke out a split decision while staying in contention for the coveted gold medal when the action resumed in the Caribbean Development Boxing Tournament in Bridgetown, Barbados last Friday evening.
Akiel Mounter was also in winners’ row defeating Curlan Robinson of Anguilla after employing a well-constructed two fisted attack. Mounter is also in line for at least a silver going into the finals.
The job is not yet done and the Guyanese unleashed a strong squad last evening all set to continue their dominance. Christopher Moore took on Grenadian Nalon Cyrus in a Lightweight (youth) encounter while Light/Welterweight Colin Lewis matched gloves with Barbadian Derek Hyman.
Middleweight Desmond Amsterdam opposed Jamaican Jonathan Harmon while Jason Bakker took on another Jamaican, Ricardo Brown in a Super/Heavyweight encounter. This is the second time that Gibson, fighting in the Bantamweight division has triumphed over the Bajan after pounding out a points win when the two faced off in October, also in Barbados.
Then, it was easy going for the Guyanese unlike last Friday night when the Bajan seemed better prepared for the bout and turned in a much improved performance. Reports out of the Island suggested that the bout was rated among the most action packed seen in Barbados for quite a while.
The toe to toe battle really thrilled the crowd and after the victory, Gibson has retained the tab as favourite to win the gold. The Guyanese are yet to lose a bout and the confidence level emanating from their camp suggests that the trend will continue and they plan to return laden down in gold.
Meanwhile, the local pugilists have been making waves on the island and has been regular features on the Barbados sports news and newspapers. Vice President (GBA) Maurice Rajkumar, who is managing the team is indeed ecstatic and lauded the efforts of the local gladiators.
He said that as he observes the boxers in action he experiences a feeling of pride especially when he remembers the struggle to acquire adequate funds to offset the cost of the trip. Once again he has extended sincere gratitude to those members of the corporate community that pitched in to assist.
Listen to the man that is throwing Guyanese bright future away
