With Christmas a mere 16 days away, and public servants wondering, Government yesterday announced a $25,000 bonus for public servants. The bonus is half of what they would have received last year.
The disclosure was made yesterday by Finance Minister Winston Jordan during his wind-up and rebuttal of the 2017 National Budget which is currently engaging the National Assembly.
Defending the budget measures and hikes in a number of fees, Jordan insisted that it is “the finest budget that I have worked on and produced”.
He said that to ease the journey to the ‘Good Life’, Government has approved the payment of a one-off, tax-free bonus of $25,000 to all public servants earning less than $500,000 per month.
These are for public servants working within the ministries, departments and regions.
“We ask all Guyanese to be patient with us, as we clear a path to the good life. The future is indeed bright,” Jordan said.
In December last year, for the first Christmas in office, the Coalition Government had announced a one-off payment of $50,000 for all public servants earning less than $500,000 per month, as a Christmas bonus.
Over 30,000 workers reportedly benefitted then.
It is unclear whether the $25,000 includes members of the Disciplined Services.
