Dear Editor,
I noticed in the KN newspaper that athletes were selected for a National Elite Camp by Mr. Edison Jefford based on their performance at the National Schools’ Championship which was recently concluded.
I must note that Rekie Williams, from District 1 (North West) wasn’t selected despite excellent performances in the 10km road race where he placed second and first in the 5000 metres. ýHe won the 5000 metres convincingly, while Delroy Leitch from District 6 (Corentyne) placed third and Matthew MacKenzie (Georgetown) placed second (I may be wrong for Matthew). The 10km road race had its controversy.
Rekie continues to perform at the National level and yet is not being recognised. Rekie is currently one of the best Junior Distance Athletes, along with Delroy Leitch and Matthew MacKenzie. He is also younger than these two athletes. I believe without assistance from Coach Blacks and myself, Rekie would have faded away just like the other hinterland athletes who have performed excellently over the years. I’m kindly asking if Mr. Jefford can include him in this National Elite Camp. Rekie will not disappoint; he’s a humble youth who hails from the Waramuri Mission in the Moruca Sub-Region of Region One. He’s one of our future athletes that will make Guyana proud and just need the assistance at the National level.
Andrew Campbell – Assistant Team Manager, District One
Editor’s note: we passed on this letter to Mr. Jefford who explained that the race was controversial, the outcome had to be determined. That has since been done and Rekie Williams’ name should have been on the preliminary list of selectees. Mr. Jefford has informed us that Rekie Wiliams has been accepted in the National Elite Camp.
