Dear Editor,
We write out of an abundance of concern for what is going on in and what passes for the Guyana Police Force today. Almost everyone knows of the recent murder of the carpenter on the Corentyne and the allegations of police corruption that were made in relation to that senseless incident. Now we are told that the commander of the Berbice Division is being replaced by a senior officer when it is known, that very senior police officer operated as escort for wanted man, Brian Bisram from and to the airport and during his stay in this country.
We are afraid that moves are already underway that will impact on the case if or when those accused are ever tried. Editor, you might recall a few months ago when a very senior officer’s vehicle was seen being filled up with gas from the police fuel depot in Berbice. It was not surprising that nothing came out of that matter because he is favoured by a certain senior minister of the government.
We would like someone to tell us what message these incidents are sending to the rank and file. Almost every day we read of one rank or another being ensnared in corrupt practices. We are definitely not comfortable with the decisions of the Commissioner. Imagine that there is no oral communication between a very high functionary of the force and the man immediately below him. There is no discussion on policy’ just arbitrary decisions communicated in writing. This is a ridiculous state of affairs that President Granger needs to stop because it doesn’t look as if the relevant Cabinet ministers have the will to make their presence felt.
