Landfills typically become the final resting place for waste, but some landfills are
quickly turning that stereotype on its head. In addition to receiving waste materials, composting is allowing landfills to innovate and to give back to the community, economically and environmentally.
Currently all organic matter arriving at the Haags Bosch Landfill located at Eccles, East Bank Demerara, is being piled in the active cell. However, one of Guyana’s composting experts has said that the organic matter arriving at the facility could be put to better use.
The expert explained that with a shredder, plastic wood, grass and leaves can be shredded to produce organic fertilizer. The expert added that this would see farmers moving away from chemical fertilizers which can damage the environment.
It was added that one of the benefits of keeping compostable waste out of landfills, is that it reduces landfill methane – a greenhouse gas that is highly flammable. The solid waste that is buried in a landfill does not receive oxygen and produces methane. The expert said with the reduction of methane the risk of fires at Haags Bosch will be significantly reduced.
Composting at Haags Bosch will also provide a cheap and reliable source of fertilizer for Guyana’s agriculture sector.
