Dear Editor;
Guyana is heading in a dangerous direction if no one changes direction soon. Barama want to send home 500 workers. Wales estate is closing and sending home 1700. Miners are crying foul and many other businesses. Mr. Jordan is seeing an increase in the economy.
We might have to borrow those glasses that Mr. Jordan is using before we can see things that only he can see. Mr. Jordan, I was a student at the University and even though you are much more qualified than I am, I can safely say that the economy is on the decline and is not gaining momentum daily.
The reason you are seeing an increase in the economy is because of the increase in revenue and that can be tricky if only accessed by those means. I can explain,
Someone imports 10 apples and pays taxes on 5 of them.
Now because of the decline in spending power, those same people are only importing 6 apples and pay taxes on those 6 apples because of the 100 % inspection on the wharfs now.
So because of this, it may seem to you that the economy is making more money due to this 10 % increase in declaration, but because of this the store owner will send home one or two staff members due to the decline in his revenue. So it may seem like an increase for the Treasury but it is a declining for the working class. If you look at it from this prospective the economy is declining.
The banning of 8 year old vehicles is the biggest mistake of all time. Guyana is already equipped for parts for these vehicles. Now they are banned, we will need to go through a transition which is costly.
This means people will stop bringing these parts for older vehicles and trying to cater for newer ones.
When people buy these newer cars which we can’t afford anyway, the parts will not be readily available, so one will have to air freight a light or bumper which will be very expensive. Just a couple months ago you could have bought a car for $1.6 million now a newer car is $2.6 million.
They were cars for 1000 US dollars that are now around 5000 US dollars. Keep in mind that the county is facing economic hardship.
When will the politicians understand that Guyanese can’t afford these changes? Mr. Jordan say he is trying to promote a “green economy. “ He should be trying to promote a “healthy economy first”
