Dear Editor;
Please publish this letter in your newspaper, subsequent actions may avert another national disaster. I cannot resist recalling the drinking of cyanide for “COOL- AID”, by more than 900 human beings on Guyana soil on November 18, 1978, after reading that GWI has been using an un-certified chemical in its water treatment process at selected locations.
As information becomes more and more available, I am now convinced that GWI has very little or no regards for public opinion. This is not surprising, since there is an old saying that goes like this, “WHAT YOU PUT IN IS WHAT YOU GET OUT”.
I just cannot understand the reason for the Guyana Government’s silence on such an important and urgent development. I am aware based on media reports that the Health Minister spoke to the GWI’s chief and that he is satisfied with the explanation given. This certainly is not a professional response to a public outcry.
The “he say and she say” investigative approach is useless when the health and safety of human beings are at stake. Additionally, there seem to be a serious integrity problem, that is, in relation to what is the truth, Are we just comfortable sitting in our high places, awaiting another national disaster.
Please note I deliberately did not use the word, ‘deaths.” People have the human right to know what they are consuming.
The Government of Guyana has the responsibility to urgently set up a commission of inquiry to determine the soundness of the allegations and the way forward.
Silence is not the solution; it can be perceived as collusion and/or helplessness. In writing this article I did take into account that the Government is young.
However, I cannot justify using this as an excuse for being passive. Mr President, I respect you and I love you. I understand the many constraints. I heard you at your swearing-in and was moved by what you said and knew that it was coming from inside of you.
I therefore beg you to ensure that your good work is not dismissed. We voted not for a political party, we voted for righteousness. I beseech you to fearlessly stand up for what is right. Righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach to its people.
