Statistics released by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) shows that there has been a decline in fatal accidents for the period September 15 to October 20, as compared to the same period last year.
According to Operation Safeway figures, seven fatal accidents were recorded for the period this year, as compared to 12 for the same period last year. There were 25 serious accidents this year, in comparison to 37 last year for the same period.
Thirty-five minor accidents were confirmed for the period this year in comparison to 44 in 2015. There were 42 damage accidents confirmed this year, compared to 56 the previous year.
For the period January 1, to October 20, 2016, a total of 31 accidents were recorded in Police ‘A’ Division which resulted in 33 deaths of which two were children.
Before Operation Safeway in this same Police Division (January 1 to September 14) there was a total of 29 accidents resulting in 30 deaths of which two were children.
After Operation Safeway (September 15 to October 20) two accidents were recorded. Three persons died as a result; there were no deaths of children.
A total of 97 accidents have been recorded so far for this year. These resulted in 104 deaths, nine of whom were children. Last year, there were 80 accidents which resulted in the death of 94 persons12 of whom were children.
The GPF has recorded 7,417 cases since September 15. A whopping 4,125 drivers were randomly tested for alcohol. Of that 3,696 of these tests were conducted during the night of which 570 were found to be above the legal limit.
In addition, 58 persons were found to be above the legal limit by day. They were all charged with 329 of them being fined.
Their licences were endorsed and a notable number suspended.
The GPF also recorded driving under the influence cases.
Eight hundred and twenty-one persons were charged with the following offences, tinted vehicles 176; unlicensed driver 92; private hire 67; using cell phones while driving 66; failing to wear seat belts 354; failing to wear safety helmets 54; and breach of traffic light signals 97.
