Dear Editor,
Since the present school term started, I’ve been taking my kids almost every day to the DeKendren Nursery and Zeelugt Primary schools and more than once kittens and pups could be seen in both school compounds and only recently I saw two kittens in the nursery school. Asking one teacher about their presence there, she informed me that people make it a habit to stray the animals in the compound and I said that is nice because they are bound to woo the children’s heart and they in turn would care for the strays and might even take them home. However she said that they have to keep an eye on the kids when they play with them because they might mishandle them and cause them to die.
I’m not certain if this actually occurred, to make her say that; but if that happens I’m quite sure that experience will always remain with them and could even affect them. Whilst there are always negatives and positives to someone’s actions, I believe it’s better for them to leave the animals there instead of leaving them on the roadways to die or punish. The training our kids receive from us about the treatment of animals will impact their lives because not all the children treat the strays with kindness at the schools. Some of them torment the animals.
Editor, seeing strays about the place is not strange and from what I gather, during the PPPC’s era, you could have taken your pet and have them spayed or neutered free. I’m not certain if the persons conducting that exercise visit people’s home to do that but I recall that they would announce when they are visiting the area and persons desirous of having their pets sprayed or neutered could make contact with them.
Now I understand that you have to pay to have your pets spayed or neutered and given the way this country is present, I am quite sure that we would see a huge increase in stray kittens and pups because people would opt for cheaper solutions and just stray them away. This Government should come up with a solution to combat this issue because stray animals are being greatly abused whilst they are trying to survive and an increase in strays would only increase their torment. Hopefully no army retiree has to be appointed to launch a COI into this.
