Raising greater awareness about childhood cancers and garnering support for families dealing with such experiences were the main thrusts of a walk hosted by the Key Club of the Georgetown International Academy last Saturday.
The walk which began at the National Park Parking Lot, proceeded along Carifesta Avenue into High and Main Streets, before ending at the Parade Ground, to solicit pledges and funds in aid of children with cancers, especially children from the hinterland.
The participants were mainly young people of the high school who are advocating under the theme, “Children walking for Children – Help us fight Cancer NOW,” and Ministry of Social Protection.
Key Club is an organization of high school students and youths mainly from the United States and Canada who team up with Caribbean counterparts for charitable work. Its presence in Guyana dates back to December 2014 to help persons with cancer to access long term treatment.
Minister Lawrence commended the group and participants for their efforts to raise awareness and funds for such a worthy cause. She noted that “many times we see the victims and we give them support and that is good, but they need their family’s support as well, and there are those families that are also shattered by the situation, and we need to support those families too. So I’m asking you to extend whatever help you can, as an individual or as an organization represented here, to those families”.
The Georgetown International Academy Key Club, sponsored by the Barbados South Kiwanis Club, was established in December 1, 2014.
Over the past three years, members of the club have volunteered their time and talents in a number of ways, including the planting of trees at the Parade Ground for National Tree Planting Day last year; painting of National Park benches at the Rugby field, building of hydroponics gardens for the Ruimveldt Children’s Aid Centre and the St. John’s Bosco Boys Orphanage, International Coastal Clean-ups, previous Avon Cancer Walks, Thanksgiving projects at the Red Cross Convalescent Home, Christmas Cheer with the residents of the Dharm Shala and more recently “Operation Backpack”, a project through which we donated school supplies to kids of the Redeemer and Bel Air Primary Schools.
“Key Club is about service”, said its President, Gabriel Strand, “and today, we have the chance to not only share that service, but to help make a difference that matters. The time, energy and resources we invest today will pay off in dividends for our communities, their children and their futures”.
