The Region Five Education Department, last Tuesday, held a mass rally at Rosignol, West
Bank Berbice for schools between Bush Lot and Ithaca under the theme: IMPROVING STUDENTS’ PERFORMANCE THROUGH PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT.
The rally was one of the many activities organized by the Education department in observance of Education Month which began on September 1.
After marching from the vicinity of the Berbice Bridge to the Rosignol Secondary School, students were addressed by Schools’ Chief Welfare Officer, Ms. Gillian Vyphuis, a native of West Berbice.
Reflecting on the theme of the rally, Ms. Vyphuis said that she was disappointed not seeing many parents in attendance at the rally. She noted that research has shown that in cases where parents are actively involved in the education of their children, and being supportive of the school, those parents generally see very good results.
And she urged the few parents present to continue to provide as much support as possible for their children, since such support can only yield positive results.
Students were advised to be focused, and to remain in school so that they may be able to maximize the opportunities available in school, as their teachers strive to provide them with the relevant experiences and exposure. They were told that they must attend school every day, and be punctual if they are to take full advantage of the programs available in school.
At the end of the rally Rosignol Secondary School was announced winner of the banner competition. Second place went to Cotton Tree Primary School.
