Convicted female drug dealer bolts Guyana after securing bail
Coming days after the big fall out over the skipping of the country of condemned drug kingpin Barry Dataram, another convicted overseas-based drug dealer has fled the country.
This time it is a 61-year-old grandmother.
Donna Charles, of Lot 4 Wapping Lane, New Amsterdam, was found guilty on two charges of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking by Magistrate Alex Moore in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court.
The woman was charged with being in possession of 1 ½ grams of cocaine and having 585 grams of cannabis both for the purpose of trafficking.
Prosecutor, Inspector Grace Bristol, told the court that on April 22, last, ranks of the narcotics branch of the Criminal Investigation Unit in Georgetown after receiving certain information travelled to Berbice and raided the woman’s home.
After conducting searches the cocaine was found wrapped in a bed sheet on a sofa. Further searches unearthed a black plastic bag in the microwave with marijuana.
The items was collected and tested. The woman was taken to Georgetown where she was charged and placed before the court. The matter was subsequently transferred to the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court where it continued.
In the meanwhile, Charles was subsequently granted bail and never returned to court. It has been reported by reliable sources that the woman has skipped the country.
The matter continued expatriate and she was tried in absentia. The microwave was tendered in court.
Donna Charles was subsequently found guilty and sentenced to three years jail on both charges. In addition she was fined an additional $30,300 or six months in jail on the cocaine charge.
On the marijuana charge she was slapped with a fine of $450,000 or an additional one year in jail.
It is not certain if Interpol has been contacted.
